Associations
Here are some key points to consider when choosing a massage therapy association in Australia:
Association Recognition: Ensure that the association you choose aligns with your values and is recognised by health funds. This is important because if the association is not recognised by health funds, your clients will be unable to claim their expenses through private health insurance.
CPE Requirements: Investigate the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements of the association. Determine what they accept as CPE and whether they recognise any course or only those they have approved. Consider how you will meet these requirements.
Communication Channels: Check how the association communicates with its members. They may use phone, email, postal mail, social media, or text messages. If you need prompt responses, ensure their communication methods align with your expectations.
Responsiveness: Test the association’s responsiveness by calling their office and asking a question. This will give you an idea of how quickly and effectively they handle member inquiries.
Scope of Practice: Review the association’s scope of practice and determine if it fits with your business model.
Coverage for Other Modalities: If you offer additional services such as beauty services, naturopathy, personal training, or other specialised modalities, consider choosing an association with a broader focus that can cover all your modalities under one insurance policy.
Involvement: Consider your level of involvement. Some associations have active local networks and regular meetups, while others may be less engaged. If you prefer an active network, select an association that offers these opportunities.
Some groups call themselves Institutes, schools, academies, or associations but may offer no real benefits, so it is important to ask questions.

Suppliers
As massage therapists we require a lot of consumables and at the very least some basic equipment.

Insurance
If you are working as a massage therapist, it is important to have appropriate insurance cover. Just some of the types of insurance you may wish to consider are mentioned here.
Professional Indemnity insurance can provide protection if someone files a claim against you for alleged negligence. For example, if a client sues you, claiming that a massage treatment you provided aggravated their injury and is seeking financial compensation.
Public Liability coverage safeguards you against third-party injury or property damage that may occur at your workplace, in public while conducting business, or at your client’s location. For instance, if a client or visitor trips and gets injured on your premises, public liability insurance will address the resulting financial implications.
Product Liability insurance protects you from financial liability if any third-party personal injury or damage is caused by the products you sell or supply. Suppose some clients claim developing rashes from a product you sold and ask for compensation.
Business Insurance protects your business by addressing damage to equipment and property from accidents, theft, fire, and other incidents. If you have a home based business, this may be covered by your home and contents insurance, but please make sure you specify this, as not all insurers cover this.
